brought it to Ireland when William of Orange came in 1689. Another legend says that Irish patriots robbed English cannonballs and rolled
them down a country lane by the light of a full moon. Spectators often bet on the outcome and offer advice to their favoured competitor in

Flower of Cahermore Song
Though 10,000 miles away
In fair, golden W.A.Yet I never can forget my native shore
And no matter where I stray
I will proudly sing each dayHow McCarthy won the Flower of Cahermore
Sure, his age was scarce nineteen
When he hailed from Mealisheen
‘Neath the shadows of majestic CarrigrourAnd it was a glorious sight
To see the hillsides burning bright
When McCarthy won the Flower of Cahermore
Down the slopes of Rowry Glen
There marched three hundred men
All to meet the great O’Brien at his door
When the Champion saw the youthHe said “Boys, I’ll tell the truth
He will never take the Flower of Cahermore”.So, the bowl fell into play
And O’Brien he led the wayAnd the Ross men cheered their championO’er and o’erBut their cheering was in vain
For McCarthy made it plainThat he meant to take that Flower of CahermoreI may travel many the mile
In search of fortune’s smileEre I steer my barque to Erin’s lovely shore
Yet the thought will bring delight
Be my pathway dark or brightHow McCarthy won the Flower of Cahermore. Here’s to that noble boy
May his life be filled with joyMay he never lose the laurels that he gained
And each day that rolls along
Make his arms stout and strong
To defend that Flower, he won in Cahermore
To defend that Flower, he won in Cahermore.
