The Abbey Graveyard in Rosscarbery is a recorded monument and includes two other
recorded monuments, that of the Benedictine Priory ruin and St Cummins Well. The Cork
County Council currently has responsibility for the management of the graveyard.
‘The graveyard is located in the southern area of the town of Rosscarbery in West Cork.
It is situated in the townland of English Island. It stands on a hill in a difficult to access
position.
Church
The church is rectangular in shape with the east and west gables fallen. The north and
south walls still stand but are in poor condition.
History
This church is thought to have been founded by the Benedictines in 1218 and is
depicted on the 1541 map as in ruins.’
The Abbey Graveyard is situated on Church Road in Rosscarbery town, overlooking
Rosscarbery estuary. This ancient burial ground has the ruins of St Mary’s Benedictine Priory,
which may date from the thirteenth century.
